"You are a piano nerd like me" - Kelly, my piano teacher

It might seem really silly, but while I was already serious about piano at the time that my piano teacher Kelly told me those words, hearing for the first time out loud was what solidified it for me that holy shit I love piano

Hi, if you know me irl, you know that I am literally autistic about piano!!! But actually as funny as it seems, that hasn't always been the case, and since this is my personal website after all you get a bit of Jacqueline-lore dump!!!

I was born and raised in Vietnam and immigrated to America when I was 12 years old. While my parents did allow/encourage me to practice piano when I'm in America, because I came here so late, due to them being Asian parents they drilled into my head "You came here later than everyone else so you have to work twice as hard as everyone to get into good university/get a good job". This is obviously a very abridged version and lots of things happened but basically while I did play piano somewhat during my teenage years, I eventually dropped it to pursue school/programming/other things and it wasn't until after I graduated university during COVID 2020 that I really looked into piano again

During COVID I tried some online lessons but I don't think it was for me so my journey with piano was on and off, with me having ADHD I found myself in a cycle of hyperfocusing for like a month then burn out and stop practicing for a few months. It wasn't until January of 2023 that I seriously sat down and properly took lesson in person. Even then, it would take another 2 years before I started really liking piano

My hot take about passion is that sometimes you actually need to really spend the time really grinding and actually getting over a difficult wall in anything that you do before you can consider something truly your passion. Yeah I always liked piano, but having spent 2 years taking lessons, facing a lot of struggle and overcoming it, finally getting to the point where I was kinda good enough to play songs that I like that it really click for me that "Oh wow wth piano is actually so fun wth"

Before you know it, I bought my first fancy digital piano October? of 2024 as a birthday gift to myself to encourage myself, nothing fancy, just you know, the best digital piano available by Yamaha at the time - a CLP-895 GP. I bought it telling myself "Ya im just a casual I don't need a fancy actual grand this is good enough"

Then half a year later? Kelly told me the quote above, I realized oh shit wait no I dont just really like piano I fucking love this thing dude , because of that I started researching acoustic grand piano and in September of 2025, I bought the piano purchase of my lifetime - a Polished White Yamaha C2xSH3 (Yamaha conservatory piano line 5'8 with silent system). The rest is history

Maybe it's autism, maybe it's Stockholm syndrome from all the practice, maybe I'm just weird bro but I can't imagine my life without piano anymore. I love piano so much, I love playing them, I love piano as an object, I am even working on becoming a piano technician so I can fix piano, that's how much I love piano. I think I'm a bit too old/started taking piano a bit too late to become a concert pianist, but that's okay and tbh I don't want to. Piano brings me so much joy , and as I said on my about me I worry if I take piano even more serious than I do now I might burn out and stop loving it one day. Instead, I simply want to be able to express to the world whenever someone see me play piano that I love the instrument itself, the music that I play, how much joy it bring to me. And I hope reading through this section of this page have conveyed to you the same!

Personal Recitals

These are recitals I mostly perform solo and organized myself.

Jacqueline & Friends Recital #2: Electric Bungaloo — TBD

Intro

I don't have a date for this yet as I still have to learn a lot of material for this recital. But this recital was originally meant to be a celebration for when my actual piano get here (more on that in the My Piano section).

Since by now I am already a professional/getting paid to play piano and grew a lot since my last recital, I try to really push myself to raise the bar for myself as to what I deem to be acceptable for performing as well as trying to play more technically demanding songs.

I will also for the first time trying to READ (instead of straight up memorizing) some of the easier songs since I've been doing that for my church job. Of course since it hasn't happened yet these are just wishful thinking! But that is my aspiration for now

Jacqueline & Friends Recital # 1 — November 8th, 2025

This is a very special recital for me for so many reason, this was celebrating me purchasing an actual accoustic grand piano, first time hosting my own recital ever, learning enough material to fill out like 1 hr - 1 hr 15 mins worth of music, and while I didn't play it perfectly, play it good enough. But most important of all, I was so blessed that 33 of my friends actually came to listen to me play , this was at my house btw so we didn't even have enough chair or room for that matter and some people literally sat on my DDR machine to watch LOL

I organized the recital as a celebration for fun but I walked away from it feeling really proud, for the first time in my life I felt like I was somewhere as a pianist. I mean even if I wasn't getting paid for it, people showed up for me, listened to me and genuinely seemed like they were having fun. Heck Kelly even came and gave a speech about me too (I didn't ask her to!). I definitely would consider this day one of the top moment in my life

The Story

There is actually a really cool story behind my piano so I wanted to devote an entire section to it. But if you can't tell from this website already, aesthetic is very important to me — so of course when I bought my piano, I always wanted to buy an A E S T H E T I C piano, which means I had to buy a white piano.

That restriction is actually really funny because I was willing to buy an even fancier piano than the one I have. I considered the Yamaha Sx line, but the Cx line is the last premium line where Yamaha actually offers Polished White as an option — so Cx it is.

As you might know, pianos are... well, expensive. Not sharing this to brag, but a regular Yamaha C2xSH3 MSRPs for about $55k. The white version tho... $65k???

Most people would be like "Uh hell no that's insane I'm not paying an extra 10k for a white piano bruh"

Well... I'm crazy. Yes, it's me — I am financially irresponsible.

But I guess Yamaha too did not think there would be someone insane enough to pay an extra $10k for a white piano. My Yamaha dealer called Yamaha corporate, and there was not a single White C2xSH3 in stock in the entire US!

But since I was willing to pay, Yamaha actually built a brand new white C2xSH3 just for me, shipped straight from factory TO ME. HOW COOL IS THAT? MY PIANO IS LITERALLY BUILT JUST FOR ME. Now you see why it deserves its own section bro.

There are a lot of other cool things too — my dealer even let me loan a (black) C1x while I wait! Huge shout out to Freehold Music Center, I love them. That's why you'll see a black piano in some of my pictures.

Regardless — let me introduce you to My Sweet Piano.

My Sweet Piano

You named your piano "My Sweet Piano"??? Isn't that like naming your cat "My Sweet Cat" or something???

Kinda, the name is a bit of a joke — but a very well-meaning one! I named my piano MSP because MSP is actually a Sanrio sheep character, and btw, my 2nd favorite Sanrio character behind Cinnamoroll.

Most people would have assumed I'd name my piano Cinnamoroll or something because I love Cinnamoroll so much — but I love piano so much too. Naming it Cinnamoroll would make it less special, like sharing the spotlight. Naming it MSP gives my piano its own distinct identity.

MSP as a character is great too — in Netflix My Melody & Kuromi, MSP is portrayed as a reliable, can-do-it-all character, always there for her friends. That parallel into how I feel about my piano: it will be my reliable companion who sticks with me for the rest of my life who can handle all the difficult songs I wanna play

But also calling my piano a sheep is really cute. My piano doesn't just "play" music — it bahs for me. I don't know, it just makes sense in my head ok.

Church

First day as pianist at St. Luke's
First day!

In December 2025 I saw a post in the Center Valley Facebook group by pure chance — a church was looking for a pianist. Even though I was really serious about piano, I was reallllyyyy nervous about applying. Like, I'm not classically trained, I'm literally a software engineer, went to school for computer science. Looking back I felt so bad for the pastor hahaha because I used every excuse I could to put myself down and talk myself out of it - "I'm not a Christian! I can't really sight read! I'm just a hobbyist! Have a backup just in case I suck!" My word.

But I'm really thankful the pastor was patient and pushed me, because I think taking on this job was arguably one of the most important decisions I've made in my life.

See, for most of my life I was basically chasing money. Yeah I had a genuine interest in CS, but I can't deny that a lot of my decisions were made not because it's something I *want* to do, but because it's something I *financially* should do. Like even with software — if I was chasing my passion, I would have loved to go into game dev instead, but game developers are stereotypically underpaid and overworked, so while I was in school I basically resigned myself to only applying to FAANG/Fintech type companies. And nowadays I really don't feel much for software anymore — it's truly just something I do to pay the bills.

But as I kept doing my church gig, I noticed a shift in my mindset. I'm not *that* good at piano yet, so it still takes me a lot of time to prepare for each service — considering how much I practice, the hourly rate probably wouldn't even hit minimum wage (though I'll obviously get faster as I keep at it). But... it didn't matter to me. It's not like I don't get burnout what do you mean bruh burnout is my default state, I do, and yet even when I feel it, all it takes is a single night of sleep before I find the motivation to keep pushing. I'm always so nervous before each service, and yet once it's done, I'm happy and glad I did it every time.

So why? I think I finally figured it out. When I write code, I'm usually working on projects that a PM came up with — features designed to make money or get something out of end users. I rarely see the people actually using what I build. And even when I do, I work on such a big engineering team that my contribution isn't significant enough to say *I specifically* made someone's day. But church is different — I see my impact immediately. I watch people enjoy the music I play, and since I get the freedom to pick songs for prelude, postlude, etc., people have told me they love what I choose and how I play. There's something really special about doing something where you can directly see the impact you make on people.

Over time, playing for church has become something I take real pride in. I obviously don't need the money as a software engineer, but I'm way more proud to say I make money playing piano for a church than I am about being a software engineer. The pressure and stress are still there of course — but I know it's something I want to do.

Slowly I started feeling like money isn't the most important thing in my life anymore. That's kinda scary actually since I started to... dream. I want so badly to go back to school to study piano. I wish my life had gone differently, that maybe I'd minored in piano instead of double majoring with math.

But that's okay, every day I work at piano, I get better. And most importantly, every day I'm doing something I really love. I know I have a really good life and I'm privileged enough to be in a position where I can do this church gig because I *want* to, not because I have to. But more than that, even though it sucks that I feel so strongly about this, I think it's also a blessing to feel so strongly about something, having a passion is both a blessing and a curse. Having this passion causes me to have regret, but it has also propelled me forward, it's because I feel so strongly about piano that I work hard at it every single day. And ya, maybe I could have done more with piano when I was younger, but there's no better time than now.

So from the bottom of my heart, thank you St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ferndale. Thank you for taking a chance on me, and thank you for letting me pursue my passion more seriously. I've improved so much since I started with you guys, but I want to keep improving, I want to play better, and I want to keep seeing you guys smile at the music I play.

PS: Imagine paying to hear me play poorly smh smh

Favorite Hymns

Songs that hit different when you're the one playing them

ELW-367

Now All the Vault of Heaven Resounds

I just like how upbeat this is. It's so fun too, the arrangement basically is just like playing Ode of Joy going downward then upward slamming the chord on beat. Very satisfying to hit those chord

ELW-742

What a Friend We Have in Jesus

The arrangement in the accompaniment book is actually really really pretty, it's quite difficult but it's so good that it's worth it

ELW-793

Be Thou My Vision

Another super pretty song with really great arrangement in the accompaniment book

Moments Worth Remembering

Services that stood out — a personal diary of the ones I want to remember

The First One

February 15, 2026

My very first service as St. Luke's pianist. I was so nervous going in but it happened, I did it, and it was the start of something I didn't even fully understand yet.

The One I Bombed

April 5, 2026

March had 5 Sundays that month and I said yes to covering the 5th one — which meant I only had a week before my regular April 1st service. Not enough time to prepare properly, and it showed. I didn't feel good about my playing at all. Lesson learned: don't overcommit on back-to-back Sundays.

The One Where I Finally Felt Like I Belonged

May 3, 2026

I don't know what exactly changed but something clicked this service. I walked in and for the first time I genuinely felt like I had earned my place there. It took 3 months but finally I felt like I'm not just winging it anymore.

The One I Had to Miss

June 21, 2026

First time I ever had to cancel a service, and it was because I got sick. :( I felt really bad about it — I don't like letting people down, especially for something like this that means so much to me.
